Special Ed

The Middle School offers a wide range of instructional opportunities in all academic areas. The concept of inclusion is addressed within the building. The course descriptions are as follows:

  1. Inclusionary Classes- Identified LD, MD, and BD students are scheduled into appropriate education classes, including academic and exploratory classes. In some courses, the general education and special education teachers collaborate, with shared decision making; while in other classes the content is taught by the general education teacher and supported by the special education teacher who monitors progress and makes accommodations as required by individual need. Other classes are assisted by a special education paraprofessional who acts as a liaison between general and special education teachers, monitors progress of identified individuals, and implements accommodations recommended for specific learning styles.
  2. Level 1 (Resource or Special Class with Integration)- These programs target students whose educational needs can be met, for the most part, in general education classes. They traditionally have deficits in either reading, written expression, math, and/or organizational skills. Some may be identified with a physical disability, such as attention deficit. Both support and supplemental instruction are provided for these students and are based on individual needs.
  3. Level 2 (Self Contained with Little Integration)- This program serves students with mild mental disabilities. These students have individualized educational programs and may be integrated into general education classes, when appropriate. Inclusion classes are assisted by a paraprofessional who monitors progress and makes accommodations as recommended by the special education teacher.
  4. BD- This program serves Levels 1 and 2 students. These students are identified through behavioral assessments from teachers, the individual student, parents and informal observations of classroom performance. The Dubuque Management System is used as a basis for teaching and maintaining appropriate behaviors. The program provides instruction for all grade levels in both exploratory and general education classes. Students are integrated into general education classes when merit level is achieved. A student remains in the BD program until instruction in all classes is received outside the BD room.
