FRENCH I 9-10-11-12                   1 Year – .5 Unit Each Sem.

This is a beginning course designed to develop skills in speaking, writing, reading and comprehension of French.  Basic vocabulary and grammar are used to enable students to communicate in everyday situations.  Conversations deal with greetings, likes and dislikes, school information, shopping needs, interests, café’ settings, and making plans.  An understanding of the French speaking world will include a look a French geography, the French School system, the province of Quebec, café’ scenes, holidays, and an awareness of other French speaking parts of the world.  The exploratory program at the middle school is meant to give a brief exposure to world language.  French I is a challenging academic course in which organization, self-discipline, and a willingness to participate in learning the spoken and written language are essential.

FRENCH II 10-11-12                   1 Year – .5 Unit Each Sem.

Prerequisite:  French I

This course is a continuation of the skills begun in French I.  As vocabulary and grammatical structures are added, the level of communication increases.  Students are now able to communicate and understand more complicated thoughts on a wider range of topics including family, animals, shopping for food and clothing, past and future events, vacation and city activities.  The studies of Paris, African French speaking countries and the influence of French in the world enhance the language study.

FRENCH III 11-12                   1 Year – .5 Unit Each Sem.

Recommended grade for success C or Above in French II

Greater emphasis on accuracy and depth are placed on skills in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing.  Students are now able to understand more extensive authentic material through reading and comprehension and are able to express more complex thought through speaking and writing.  Units include personalities, travel, housing, giving and receiving directions, table conversations, geographic terms, and activities.  Many new vocabulary and grammatical expressions are added.  There is a unit on French Impressionism and French provinces.

FRENCH IV 12                   1 Year – .5 Unit Each Sem.

Recommended grade for success C or Above in French III

At this level, students are able to communicate most daily events in the past, present, and future.  They use the vocabulary and grammar structures learned to this point in combination with advanced verb tenses and vocabulary to converse on a variety of topics.  The focus changes at this level include a study of French Impressionism, (this unit is presented every other year to both French III and IV) chateaux, health, and entertainment.  In the spring, we read the book Le Petit Prince.

SPANISH I 9-10-11-12                   1 Year – .5 Unit Each Sem.

The objectives of the first year of Spanish are to become acquainted with common vocabulary and sentence structure, to understand simple Spanish when spoken, and to become acquainted with the Spanish speaking cultures of the world, including foods, art, sports, and geography of the Hispanic world.  Emphasis is on speaking, listening, and writing.  Students get extensive practice in pairs and groups in exchanging authentic information in the Spanish language.  Communication is the main focus, and students are expected to speak and use Spanish in class.

SPANISH II 10-11-12                   1 Year – .5 Unit Each Sem.

Prerequisite:  Spanish I

Spanish II presents more complex linguistically structures.  There will be an emphasis on building vocabulary and grammar as well as expanding cultural themes.  Students will gain the ability to listen, speak, read, write, and create projects through class room lecture, daily work, and group work.

SPANISH III 11-12                   1 Year – .5 Unit Each Sem.

Recommended grade for success C or Above in Spanish II

Spanish III students will acquire a broader vocabulary base, as well as more advanced grammatical structures of the language.  They will strengthen their conversational, written, listening and reading skills in class through daily lecture, homework, and group presentations.  There is a plethora of assessments throughout.  Students are expected to comprehend and use Spanish in the classroom.  Culture is also emphasized.

SPANISH IV 12                   1 Year – .5 Unit Each Sem.

Recommended grade for success C or Above in Spanish III

Spanish IV is a class that emphasizes multiple grammar tenses and structures to prepare students for college level classes.  Students will need to comprehend as well as use Spanish in the entirety of the class.  There is a plethora of assessments throughout the class to help build their written, reading, oral, and listening skills through daily lecture, homework, projects, papers, and group discussions.
