Welcome to Cardinal Elementary School. We are a preschool through second grade school located in Maquoketa, Iowa, a town in eastern Iowa, of approximately 6,000 people. We have approximately 280 students from age 3 through second grade at our school. During the 12-13 school year we have one 3 year old and one 4 year old preschool in our building. We also have one prekindergarten and 4 each of kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.
At Cardinal, we focus on meeting the needs of each and every student through large group instruction, followed by small groups that focus on specific student needs.
We have a new math program (Trailblazers) that has increased rigor in math instruction through productive group work and increased opportunities for students to discover their own answers when given a problem.
Reading instruction at Cardinal focuses on the development of skills along the phonological, phonics, and comprehension continuums. Staff members meet weekly in teams to plan for small group instruction based on specific student needs.
Cardinal follows the Six Traits of Character. We celebrate good behavior through our Character Cane and by giving “coins” to students that are “caught” being good. Monthly, we have an assembly in which students introduce a new character trait and celebrate our accomplishments from the previous month. Individual classrooms each have their own behavior and academic celebrations.
Cardinal has a great family atmosphere. Staff, students, and families all work together so our students can be successful!
